Amaq, Acrylic on Canvas, 53”x53” 2006
This image shows deep connection between mother, child, water, and spirit. Breastfeeding (Amaq’ing) is not only nourishment but the first teaching, passing warmth, rhythm, and life knowledge from one generation to the next. The woman’s braids symbolize care, continuity, and ancestral ties, binding past and future together. The mirrored sky and water suggest the two worlds—the physical and the spiritual—existing at the same time, reflecting the Yup’ik understanding that spirits move through people, land, and sea. Water, even when unseen, is central: it is a lifeline like the mother herself, carrying memory, sustenance, and balance that all life depends on.
A nod to the loved ones intertwined in the care for mother and child. This image features earrings made by Micalisha Delano, baby blanket made by Mary Jensen and Baby Hat made by grandma Julie Salmon.
